About Seattle OperaSeattle Opera is a cultural icon of a major world city that speaks to all communities of, and visitors to, the Puget Sound region. By drawing their community together and by offering opera’s unique fusion of music and drama, they create life-enhancing experiences that speak deeply to people’s hearts and minds.
Founded in 1963, Seattle Opera is one of the leading opera companies in the United States. The company is recognized internationally for the quality of its productions, supportive and nurturing environment for singers and artists and is especially known for its productions of the Wagner operas, having created an “international attraction” in its past presentations of Wagner’s epic Ring, according to The New York Times. The company is committed to advancing the cultural life in the Pacific Northwest with performances of the highest caliber, and through innovative education and community programs that take opera far beyond the McCaw Hall stage. Each year, more than 80,000 people attend Seattle Opera performances and the company’s programs serve more than 400,000 people of all ages (including school performances, radio broadcasts, and community engagement initiatives).
About the Seattle Opera CenterThe Opera Center is Seattle Opera’s newest endeavor to provide state-of-the-art education, artistic, and civic spaces to the residents and visitors of Seattle and the greater Pacific Northwest Area. Through integrated operations, new partnership opportunities, increased community-wide programs, and a broad economic impact for the region, they can do more than ever before to unlock opera for all. While they will continue to present performances and programs in the adjacent Marion Oliver McCaw Hall, their administrative and production spaces have been in a building at the end of its useful life. With careful consideration in 2015, Seattle Opera’s Board of Directors moved forward with an incredible plan to build a new purpose-built facility which will revitalize the northeast corner of the Seattle Center Campus. Their new civic home will be a community resource where Seattle Opera will serve thousands more with a dedicated space for dynamic Education and Community Engagement programs to meet the growing needs of their broad community. It will create an environment for world-class artistry in a new, purpose-built facility and establish a welcoming and accessible community resource on the Seattle Center campus. It will include:
